It has been found that that the production of raspberries in greenhouses can be undertaken very well. This is especially true during the off - season. The temperature required by raspberries is cool. There is no supplemental light that is needed. During winter, it is seen that greenhouses are empty. These can be used for growing raspberries.
Raspberries that are produced in greenhouses are bigger in size, more firm and don’t rot easily. Sweetness of the fruit is reduced and it tends to be a bit more acidic. Research has shown that floricane - fruiting raspberry is well suited for growing in greenhouses. Two types of plant material can be used to grow in greenhouses. These are tissue cultured and plugs and canes. One can begin by planting raspberries in pots. The tissue cultured ones can be planted in about five gallon pots. One can use nursery matured plants too.
The canes of raspberries are placed in greenhouses. They are planted in pots. These pots are set between rows. Trellising needs to be done. Problems of mites can be reduced by applying horticultural oil. This oil should be applied before the bud breaks. Circulation of air can be done properly by using fans. This is necessary for reducing the concentration of humidity in certain places. This will, in turn, avoid fungal infection. Around eighteen to twenty degree Celsius temperature needs to be maintained during the day. At night the temperature should be lower. Provision of supplemental light aids the growth of raspberries in greenhouses.
About six weeks are needed for flowering to take place. If colder conditions are added it could augment the growth. Pollination of flowers can be undertaken by Bumble Bees. The amount of nutrients given should reduce after flowering has occurred. Ten weeks will be needed for the fruits to grow. When fruiting occurs, primocanes may start growing. These are usually for the crop to be grown in the coming year. They ought to be managed properly. Or they may grow too tall. Just four primocanes should be allowed to grow. Others should be subsequently removed. On the other hand, floricanes should be uprooted after the initial harvest is done. Plants of raspberries will continue to bear fruit for about three years at least. In this way, you can grow raspberries in greenhouses.
