Writing an Interview Turning an interview into a written piece seems not difficult on the face of it, but writing an interview requires considerable background and writing skill to do it successfully. Your approach to interview writing will be governed by several factors. Obviously the person being interviewed is the primary factor, and if you are going to write a successful and interesting interview you need to be well informed about the person whom you are interviewing; their personality, achievements, the audience they attract. The second important factor is the publication or broadcast media for which you are writing the interview. Will it have a wide or narrow audience. Is it for printed media such as a newspaper, general magazine, or a publication which targets a specific audience. Different media require different approaches and style when writing an interview. If you are writing an interview for a fashion magazine, for example, the person being interviewed will have a special appeal for those who read that magazine. Perhaps you are writing an interview with a famous designer...or a famous personality who is known for wearing designer clothing. In writing this interview you will keep in mind the magazine's readers and give them what they want, probably juicy personal information about the person you are interviewing, and information on how that person lives and works. In writing an interview, it is not your personality you want to project, but that of the person being interviewed. Sometimes an interview may be strictly a question and answer format, in which case you, the writer, must have developed a series of questions which will bring interesting responses to help you write a successful and interesting interview. The questions are important and require real knowledge about the person being interviewed. Be well prepared before writing this style interview. In other approaches, the person writing the interview may set the stage with descriptions of the person being interviewed and some review of that person's accomplishments. In some cases you will be holding the interview in the person's home, in which case when writing the interview you will provide some descriptions of the surroundings which show the tastes, lifestyle and personality of the person interviewed. In writing any interview, remember that the focus must remain upon the person being interviewed and you, the writer, serve only as a tool for developing a piece of writing that will intrigue, capture the interest and attention of your audience, and project an interesting and possibly flattering impression of the person interviewed.
